Cycling
If you're a cyclist yearning for wide open spaces, grab a train from Melbourne to Ballan and try the Parwan Valley Grasslands Tour (40kms) or Werribee Gorge Tour (24kms) Both finish in Bacchus Marsh.
From Ballan its flat landscapes then dramatically downhill. Looking for more of a mountain climb challenge? Then reverse the trip and start from Bacchus Marsh.
Either way, make sure you take a loop through the Avenue of honour and stop at one of the roadside fresh produce stalls to top up on supplies and refreshments.
The best alternative is to grab a bike, don a helmet and hit the road. You'll see so much more. Come and tour some of the region's more ‘unusual' scenic routes (and endangered habitats) and take one of the 'roads less travelled' touring options.
See V/Line for train times and connections.
Roadside Reserves: A touring Attraction
If you think of country roads and roadsides as home to nothing more than a few motley old trees, think again! Nation-wide, the network of winding bitumen, dirt tracks and roadsides covers in excess of 1.6 mill kilometers which offers a significant conservation upside - millions of kilometers of remnant vegetation.
Often it's the only original vegetation left in a sparse over-cleared landscape.
In Moorabool roadside reserves provide sites for the preservation of fragile habitats, rare plants and corridors for wildlife. Whether you're staying, day tripping or want to pop your bike on a train for a ride in the country, there are numerous touring routes through these reserves (and parks) just waiting to be discovered.
