Dunnstown

'Little Ireland'
Dunnstown has a strong Irish heritage. Many locals have ancestors who settled the area when Ireland was hit with the ‘Potato Famine’ in the 1850’s. It was popular with settlers due to its proximity to the goldfields of Ballarat and employment.
In its heyday Dunnstown boasted sawmills, a thriving township and a distillery and is named after Irish distillery owner, R. Dunn. Barley was grown for the distillery but when it closed production stopped. The Irish being Irish turned to what they knew best, potatoes. The location and climate were, and still are, perfect for spuds!
The original catholic school and church and of course, the pub, The Shamrock Hotel, are still in existence. Remnants of its early settlement dot the landscape, as do newer tourism attractions, such as the medieval fortress of Kryal Castle.
Kryal Castle is situated at the base of Mt Warrenheip and offers all things medieval: stocks, a maze, performances, jousts and much, much more. Plan a medieval getaway and stay at the Castle.
Mt Warrenheip in one of only two Victorian Volcanos still covered by bushland. The Mt Warrenheip Flora Reserve is situated at the top of the mountain and overlooks surrounding farmlands and Kryal Castle.
Dunnstown is a picturesque rural village with a lively history. Make a detour, take a peek and stop at the pub and rub shoulders with the locals. You’ll be most welcome.
