City Escape - No car required
If you're a cyclist yearning for wide open spaces grab a train from Melbourne to Ballan, cycle the Parwan Valley Grasslands Tour (40kms) or the Werribee Gorge Tour (24kms).
Both tours finish in Bacchus Marsh where you can catch a train home.
From Ballan its flat landscapes then dramatically downhill. Looking for more of a mountain climb challenge? Then reverse the trip and start from Bacchus Marsh.
Either way, make sure you take a loop through the Avenue of Honour and stop at one of the roadside fresh produce stalls to top up on supplies and refreshments.

Ballan - Steiglitz - Anakie - Lara day tour
A mostly on-road, mostly low-traffic, mostly downhill (even if subtle much of the time) day ride. Slow down and enjoy a section through the Brisbane Ranges National Park, and the historic, near ghost town, Steglitz. Take lunch, there's no food or water after Ballan until Anakie. This ride was described by Ray Peace in "Bicycling Around Victoria", Lothian, 1991.
